Course Description:
In our daily clinical practice we are often asked to do group work. This certificate program is designed for practitioners to improve their effectiveness as a group facilitator in multiple settings with a variety of diverse populations. Group therapy is a useful means to help individuals grow emotionally and solve personal problems. In this course you will learn to apply the Yalom (Interpersonal) group therapy method that emphasizes the use of multiple relationships in group processes to promote interpersonal learning and problem solving.
The course is both conceptual and experiential with a strong emphasis on practice. Learning is a collaborative and participatory process. The goal of the course is to foster a safe and stimulating learning environment that welcomes multiple perspectives and experiences.
Being an Effective Group Facilitator: Core Skills in Yalom (Interpersonal) Group Therapy Certificate Program consists of the successful completion of the four courses listed below for a total of 39 hours of instruction. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 will qualify for the Certificate Program. All courses are designed as individual workshops or as a certificate program.
Part 1: Being an Effective Group Facilitator: Basic Concepts and Clinical Applications
This one-day course will provide participants with an overview of the basic concepts and clinical applications of Yalom (Interpersonal) group therapy.
Participants will learn:
- Principles and theories of group dynamics, including group process components, developmental stages, roles, interpersonal behaviors and conflicts
- Screening and selection criteria
- Group leadership, group skills, facilitation styles, and working with group dynamics

Part 2: Being An Effective Group Facilitator: Essential Skills
Prerequisites: Part 1 or equivalent
This one-day course will present essential skills in group work. Participants will learn how to implement the strategies in group work using role play and small group practice.

Part 3: Being An Effective Group Facilitator: Case-Based Learning
Prerequisites: Part 1 and Part 2 or equivalent
During this one-day course, participants will learn to apply their core knowledge and essential skills by discussing actual group scenarios and participating in case formulation and intervention through role plays and small groups.

Part 4: Being an Effective Group Facilitator: Clinical Application in Actual Practice
Prerequisites: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 or equivalent
This longitudinal 6-week course (3-hour sessions) will be a practical, hands-on course, providing an opportunity for participants to share cases drawn from their own clinical practice. With client consent, participants will bring in actual data (e.g. audio or videotape of sessions) and use these recordings for consultation in small groups.

About the Instructor:
Dr. Sam Minsky, Ph.D., C.Psych., is a registered psychologist with over 25 years clinical experience. He is currently an adjunct professor at the Department of Adult Education and Counselling Psychology, OISE, University of Toronto and has been a faculty member at the Canadian Group Psychotherapy Association Training Program. He is a lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto where he has facilitated experiential training groups for Residents.
Dr. Minsky was the former Director of the Counselling and Learning Skills Service (CALSS) at the University of Toronto. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in Counselling Psychology. At Woodbine Psychological and Counselling Services, Dr. Minsky will provide individual and couple therapy.
