Therapeutic Interventions with Children and Parents in High Conflict Separation/Divorce Situations
Instructor: Dr. Helen Radovanovic, Ph.D., C. Psych.
Coping with parents' separation and divorce is one of the common reasons for children to be in psychotherapy. When a highly distressed separated couple lingers in intense conflicts, the quality of parental care may suffer and children are pulled into the parents' turmoil. The risk of emotional harm to children is real and signifigant. High-conflict families present with many challenges for helping professionals. Therapists and counsellors often find themselves overwhelmed as they attempt to unravel the issues, sort facts from unfounded allegations and help build a solid agreement that protects the children from chaos and conflict. A strength-based, competency building approach is essential to support therapists in their work with these families.
Course Description:
This course will explore the common dynamics, issues, and challenges presented by these families. It will assist the clinician by providing a better understanding of these families, formulation of the presenting problems, and techniques and strategies that have been shown to be most effective with this high-risk group.
The Therapeutic Interventions with Children and Parents in High Conflict Families Certificate Program consists of the successful completion of three of the four courses listed below for a total of 39 hours of instruction.
